Western Sydney Youth Collective

Greater Western Sydney is one of Australia's fastest-growing regions and home to more than 2.7 million people.

Young people understand the opportunities and challenges of living here better than anyone.

You know what it's like to travel long distances to school or work, search for affordable housing, navigate changing communities, find welcoming public spaces and imagine what the future of Western Sydney could become.

Yet too often, these experiences are missing from the conversations that shape our communities.

The Western Sydney Youth Collective exists to change that.

By creating opportunities for young people to connect, share ideas and contribute to community life, we hope to build a stronger, fairer and more inclusive Greater Western Sydney.

The Western Sydney Youth Collective is guided by the understanding that housing, transport, health, participation and opportunity are deeply interconnected.

The Fair Share Framework helps connect youth lived experience with the broader systems shaping everyday life across Greater Western Sydney.

The Youth Collective supports a wide range of activities.

Community discussions

Share your ideas and learn from other young people.

Writing and storytelling

Publish articles, poetry, photography and creative work through the Youth Gazette.

Workshops

Develop practical skills in leadership, advocacy, communication, research and community engagement.

Research

Contribute lived experience to research exploring issues affecting Western Sydney.

Community projects

Work alongside other young people to develop ideas and create positive change.

Leadership

Develop confidence, build experience and help shape future Youth Collective initiatives.

The Western Sydney Youth Collective welcomes young people who live, study, work or have a meaningful connection with Greater Western Sydney.

Whether you're at school, university, working, looking for work or simply interested in your community, there's a place for you.

No previous experience is required.

The only things we ask are that participants are respectful, open to different perspectives and willing to contribute positively to the community.

The Collective supports young people to:

• document neighbourhood experience

• participate in place-based observations

• contribute lived experience

• share stories and reflections

• identify barriers and opportunities

• strengthen understanding of everyday life across Western Sydney

This includes contributing insight across:

• Observation Sprints

• Equity Diaries

• Better Planning for Western Sydney

This work helps connect:

local experience

with:

long-term systems change.

The Collective supports young people to:

• build civic confidence

• strengthen systems understanding

• participate in projects and initiatives

• contribute ideas and lived experience

• engage in advocacy and public conversations

• connect with peers and networks

• take on leadership opportunities

The goal is not simply to hear from young people.

The goal is to support meaningful and ongoing participation in shaping communities across Greater Western Sydney.

Many organisations and communities are already doing important work across Greater Western Sydney.

The Collective aims to:

• work alongside existing initiatives

• strengthen collaboration

• connect people and ideas

• amplify effective work

• support community knowledge

• avoid unnecessary duplication

This work is about strengthening the broader ecosystem supporting young people across Western Sydney.
